Okay, so you want a website. Of course you do, it seems like everyone has one these days! But before you go about immersing yourself in HTML code and hiring web designers, there are a few things you’ll need to consider. There’s nothing worse than getting a site live and then having no idea how to market it. And if you don’t understand the ins and outs of your site, or even really know why it’s in cyberspace, then marketing it is going to be difficult, if not impossible. Ask yourself these two questions, and your whole entire website experience is bound to be much more pleasant!
First ask yourself: Who is your target audience? This is of extreme importance because you need to know how to communicate effectively with your visitors. And if you don’t understand them, or even know who they are, this is going to be impossible. You wouldn’t use the same content or web design for a celebrity gossip website that you would for an investment website. Define who you’re trying to reach with your website, and you’ve just taken a great step in getting a website that will accommodate their needs.
The next thing to ask yourself is: Why do I want a website? Many people build a website simply because they think it’s the thing to do. This is partially practical reasoning because businesses do need to stay on top of current trends and follow them. But if you’re simply putting up a site with little content, no visual appeal, and that offers nothing to your customers, then you’re better off not having a site at all because it will only reflect badly on your company. If you can identify the need for your website as being a communication channel between you and customers, or a place where customers can come and shop online, you’ll have much more direction and a much clearer website!
